Description

This original Art Deco engagement ring, circa 1920, is centered by a 2.33 carat Old European cut diamond (just over 2 carats) set in a hand-fabricated platinum mounting. The center diamond sits in an octagonal collet within an open octagonal frame, surrounded by a halo of old cut diamonds bordered by fine milgrain edging.

The geometric octagonal design is characteristic of the Art Deco period, and the pierced openwork between the center setting and the halo lets light pass through the stones. Additional diamonds are set along each tapered shoulder, leading into a platinum shank.

Old European cut diamonds were cut by hand before modern round brilliant proportions were standardized. They have a small table, a high crown, and an open culet, which produce broad flashes of light and the soft, warm brilliance associated with antique diamonds. A center stone of this size in an original period mounting is increasingly difficult to find, as many Art Deco settings were dismantled and their diamonds recut.
